Jim Deva Plaza stands as a vibrant symbol of community, activism, and inclusivity in Vancouver's Davie Village. Named in honor of Jim Deva—a pioneering LGBTQ2+ rights advocate and co-founder of Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium—the plaza embodies his enduring legacy in the fight for free expression and equality.
Jim Deva was a prominent figure in Vancouver's LGBTQ2+ community, renowned for his unwavering commitment to free speech and gay rights. Through his bookstore, Little Sister’s, he challenged censorship laws, culminating in a landmark Supreme Court case that significantly impacted Canadian publishing and censorship policies. Deva's activism and dedication to creating inclusive spaces left an indelible mark on the city.
Inaugurated in 2016, Jim Deva Plaza is Vancouver’s first pavement-to-plaza project. Located at the intersection of Davie and Bute Streets, the plaza transformed a section of roadway into a pedestrian-friendly public space. Its design features a smooth, continuous surface adorned with rainbow accents, inviting passersby to gather, relax, and engage with the community.
At the heart of the plaza lies the iconic "Megaphone" sculpture—a vibrant, steel installation serving as a modern-day Speakers' Corner. This interactive piece not only commemorates Deva’s advocacy for free speech but also provides a platform for public discourse and performance. Designed with input from the LGBTQ2+ Advisory Committee and the Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee, the Megaphone symbolizes the plaza's commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.
What is written inside the Megaphone: A safe space, inspired by Jim Deva’s lifelong passion for freedom of sexuality, gender diversity, and the fight against censorship, where LGBTQ people and allies can meet, share ideas freely, dare to dream, and love unapologetically.
Jim Deva Plaza serves as a dynamic venue for a variety of events that celebrate diversity and foster community spirit. From art installations and live music performances to markets and cultural festivals, the plaza hosts activities that reflect the vibrant character of Davie Village. Notably, it was a site for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival's West End Pop-Up, showcasing its role in citywide celebrations.

The plaza's maintenance and programming are managed through a partnership between the City of Vancouver and the West End Business Improvement Association (WEBIA). This collaboration ensures that the space remains welcoming, safe, and reflective of the community's needs. Ongoing discussions focus on balancing the plaza's open-access ethos with considerations for neighboring residents and businesses.
Situated in the heart of Davie Village, Jim Deva Plaza is easily accessible and open to all. Visitors can enjoy its inviting atmosphere, participate in community events, or simply relax amidst the vibrant surroundings. The plaza stands as a testament to Vancouver's dedication to honoring its LGBTQ2+ history and promoting inclusive public spaces.
