Located within the striking architectural structure of the Asian Centre at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver, the Asian Library is a vibrant hub for learning, cultural exploration, and academic research. This dynamic space houses extensive collections and provides thoughtfully designed areas for study and collaboration.
Diverse Collections and Services
The Asian Library maintains Asian-language holdings in ten languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Nepali, Tibetan, and Persian. The materials are organized by call numbers, regardless of language, making it easy for visitors to navigate the collections.
- Upper Floor: Features Asian stacks (P to Z), audio-visual materials, great reads, language learning resources, the librarians' office, oversized books, and reference materials.
- Ground Floor: Hosts the circulation desk, course reserves, new arrivals, and seminar rooms (506 & 616), making it a central point for accessing fresh academic content.
- Lower Floor: Houses Asian journals, Asian stacks (A to N), and current journals, offering a comprehensive resource base for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
Renovated for Collaboration and Comfort
Recent renovations at the Asian Library have transformed the space into a more dynamic environment. The upgrades included ceiling repairs, carpet replacements, and redesigned display cases. The reimagined layout fosters collaboration with new seating areas perfect for group discussions, reading circles, and library-led programs. The upper floor now features soft seating that invites relaxed learning and interaction.
A Space for Community and Academic Growth
The library isn’t just a place for books; it's a vibrant community hub. The redesign also relocated librarian offices to more accessible areas, encouraging greater interaction between students, faculty, and library staff. Study areas can be rearranged to support different programs, making the library a flexible space for various academic and cultural events.
